Judge recuses himself in case of cop charged in teen's death

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A judge has recused himself from overseeing the homicide trial of a Pennsylvania police officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager as he fled a traffic stop.

Judge Anthony Mariani made his decision Wednesday, citing an “appearance of impropriety.”

Attorney Patrick Thomassey, who represents East Pittsburgh Police Officer Michael Rosfeld, had cited comments Marianai made on a cable news program before he was assigned to the case.

Teens accused of cutting Christmas decorations for ill boy

CINCINNATI (AP) - Police say two teens accused of slashing Christmas decorations set up in an Ohio neighborhood to help a child diagnosed with terminal cancer celebrate the holiday early have been arrested.

Police in the Cincinnati suburb of Colerain Township said Thursday the juveniles were caught after a neighbor saw them slashing a decoration late Wednesday.

Campaign aims to bail out more than 500 prisoners at Rikers

NEW YORK (AP) - A human rights group says it plans to bail out more than 500 women and teenagers currently imprisoned at New York City’s Rikers Island.

The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights group plans to raise at least $5 million to fund the releases. The group says the national campaign is meant to call attention to a bail system that discriminates against minorities and the poor.
