Captures the awe and trembling wonder of God’s holiness.

Track 6: Sanctus – The Burning Holiness from the album, Lux Aeterna, marks a pivotal moment in the cantata.

Up to now, we’ve approached God's presence in humility (Introit), cried for mercy (Kyrie), longed to be heard (Domine, Audi Vocem), stood in awe of hidden glory (Gloria Obscura), and walked in faith (Credo in Via). Now—like Isaiah in the temple or Moses before the burning bush—we arrive before the holy, and we are undone. The Sanctus is not sterile—it is fire, smoke, thunder, and reverence. Holiness is not safe. It is love too pure to touch.

"Sanctus" captures the awe and trembling wonder of God’s holiness. Not just distant majesty—but a consuming fire.

Scriptural Themes:

  • Isaiah 6:1–5 – “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”
  • Exodus 3:2–5 – “Take off your sandals…”
  • Hebrews 12:29 – “Our God is a consuming fire.”
  • Revelation 4:8 – “They do not cease to say: Holy, holy, holy…”
Style: Intense, layered polyphony. Begin with a whisper, build to a thunderous wave of voices.
Mood: Overwhelmed. Fearful and reverent. A holy hush followed by a holy roar.
