A hymn of gospel-shaped humility, showing how Christ’s self-giving frees us to value others above ourselves.
Count Others More is a worship song rooted in Philippians 2:1–5, calling believers to live out the unity and humility that comes from their union with Christ. Rather than presenting humility as a moralistic command, the song celebrates Christ’s incarnation and cross as the source of both our salvation and our new way of life. Because Jesus laid aside His glory and counted us worth His very life, we are freed from pride and fear to count others more significant than ourselves. The song emphasizes that this is not about seeking suffering or proving worth, but about the Spirit shaping us in Christ’s likeness as we walk in His love and serve others with joy.
Devotion
1. The Ground of Humility (Philippians 2:1)
Paul begins Philippians 2 by reminding the church of what they already have in Christ: encouragement, comfort, love, fellowship, and mercy. Humility does not start with our effort but with God’s lavish grace. We are not called to empty ourselves out of a vacuum, but because Christ has already filled us with Himself. When we remember that our identity, security, and worth come from Him, we are freed from the endless striving for approval and recognition. Humility is not self-hatred; it is resting in Christ’s love so we can turn outward in service.
2. The Pattern of Humility (Philippians 2:5–8)
Paul points us to Jesus Himself: though He was in very nature God, He did not cling to His rights or status but humbled Himself by taking on flesh and bearing the cross. This is more than an inspiring example; it is the very means of our salvation. On the cross, Jesus counted us more significant than His own comfort, laying down His life so that we might live. Seeing Christ’s humility melts our pride, because we realize our salvation was won not by our strength but by His self-giving love. His humiliation becomes the lens through which we learn what true greatness looks like.
3. The Power for Humility (Philippians 2:2–4)
We are not left to grit our teeth and try harder at humility. Paul says to “have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” (v. 5). The very mindset of Christ has been given to us through union with Him and the indwelling of the Spirit. As we look to His cross, the Spirit conforms our hearts to His. This is the “how” of humility: not raw effort but Spirit-empowered transformation as we behold the gospel. Every act of self-giving love is not a way to earn God’s favor but a response to the favor already given in Christ.
4. The Fruit of Humility (Philippians 2:9–11)
Christ’s path of humility led to glory, and our path of humility will one day lead to joy in His presence. Every act of service, every moment we count another’s needs above our own, is a small foretaste of the coming kingdom where Christ is exalted and His people are united in love. Humility is not loss but gain, because it aligns us with the risen Lord who reigns. As we sing Count Others More, we are reminded that humility is not about proving worth or chasing suffering but about living in the freedom and joy of Christ’s self-giving love, until the day every knee bows before Him.
Lyrics
Verse 1
If Christ has given comfort, if His love has made us whole,
If His Spirit fills our weakness, binding heart and mind and soul,
Then our joy is found together, standing firm in what He’s done,
For the cross has brought us mercy, and His blood has made us one.
Pre-Chorus
Not from fear or self-protection,
But from love already shown—
Chorus
Because Christ laid His glory down,
And lifted us by grace alone,
Now freed from pride, we gladly follow,
Counting other lives more than our own.
The One who gave Himself to save us,
Now gives the strength to love and serve,
Because Christ laid His glory down,
We place their good before our own.
Verse 2
He, though equal with the Father, did not cling to heaven’s height,
But He humbled Himself in mercy, stepped into our earthly night.
Taking on our shame and weakness, bearing death upon the tree,
Through His loss we gained salvation, through His cross we live set free.
Pre-Chorus
Not in grasping for our honor,
But in Christ who calls us near—
Chorus
Because Christ laid His glory down,
And lifted us by grace alone,
Now freed from pride, we gladly follow,
Counting other lives more than our own.
The One who gave Himself to save us,
Now gives the strength to love and serve,
Because Christ laid His glory down,
We seek their joy above our own.
Verse 3
Not by seeking pain or striving, not to prove our love or worth,
But the Spirit forms Christ’s likeness, as His gospel shapes our hearts.
Every burden now is measured by His hand of sovereign care,
So His strength is shown in weakness, and His life is shining there.
Bridge
At the name of Christ exalted, every knee will bow and sing,
He who humbled now is reigning, Jesus Christ, the risen King!
So our lives proclaim His mercy, as His love transforms our ways,
Walking humbly with each other, living all our lives in praise.
Final Chorus
Because Christ laid His glory down,
And lifted us by grace alone,
Now freed from pride, we gladly follow,
Counting other lives more than our own.
Every step is filled with mercy,
Every breath a gift to share,
Because Christ laid His glory down,
We will love as He has cared.
