Praise Anyway is an imagined, bold, hope-soaked gospel-pop album that traces a redemptive journey from grief and shame to joy, healing, and radical grace.

Backstory

Mandisa Lynn Hundley, known professionally as Mandisa, was a Grammy Award-winning contemporary Christian and gospel singer who rose to prominence after competing on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006. After American Idol, she launched a successful music career in the contemporary Christian music scene and released six studio albums.

Mandisa was open about her battles with depression, anxiety, and weight issues. After the loss of a close friend to breast cancer in 2014, she experienced a period of deep depression and withdrew from the public eye. She candidly shared her journey in her 2022 memoir, Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God's Joy, aiming to encourage others facing similar challenges .

Mandisa passed away on April 18, 2024, at her home in Franklin, Tennessee, at the age of 47. Her funeral at Brentwood Baptist Church celebrated her deep faith, joyful spirit, and lasting impact on others, with loved ones emphasizing her unwavering devotion to God and the inspiration she provided through her life and music. Her death prompted tributes from fans and fellow artists, including a special performance on American Idol by former contestants Colton Dixon, Danny Gokey, and Melinda Doolittle, honoring her impact on the show and the music industry. Her powerful voice, inspirational songs, and openness about personal struggles left a lasting impression on the contemporary Christian music scene and her fans worldwide.

When an artist's life is cut short, it's natural to wonder what she might have created next. To make a thoughtful and respectful inference about where Mandisa's music might have gone next, we can consider:

  1. Tracing the arc of her lyrical themes over time,

  2. Overlaying key events in her life, especially her faith-based journey through depression,

  3. And projecting forward into where she might have been emotionally and spiritually after her latest season.

Lyrical Themes Over Time

1. True Beauty (2007)

  • Themes: Identity, self-worth, joy, and God's view of us.

  • Key tracks like "Only the World" and "True Beauty" celebrated confidence in Christ and rejecting worldly standards.

2. Freedom (2009)

  • Themes: Breaking chains, deliverance, surrender.

  • This album reflected her personal battle with food addiction and the emotional roots behind it.

3. What If We Were Real (2011)

  • Themes: Authenticity, inner struggle, grace.

  • "Stronger" and "Good Morning" mixed encouragement with honesty, showing a blend of faith and real-life trials.

4. Overcomer (2013)

  • Themes: Triumph, resilience, identity in Christ.

  • The title track became an anthem for anyone battling adversity, and it closely tied to her friend's cancer journey.

5. Out of the Dark (2017)

  • Themes: Depression, grief, isolation, but also recovery and God's light.

  • This album was born from the deep depression Mandisa went through after her friend's death. Songs like “Unfinished” and “Bleed the Same” revealed a more vulnerable, even broken-hearted, artist—but also one healing and coming back into community.

Life Experience

By 2017, Mandisa had emerged from a "dark night of the soul" where she confessed she had isolated herself, questioned God, and wrestled with the silence. Her faith, community, and therapy brought her back. By 2022, she released a memoir titled Out of the Dark, affirming her transparency and commitment to helping others walk through their own valleys.

Given that, her next album—had she made one—likely would have entered a new phase:

  • Not just overcoming the valley, but learning how to live beyond it—how to dance again, trust again, and walk in a “new normal.”

  • A place where faith isn't just rescue but companionship.

  • Possibly, a turn toward mentorship, intercession, and legacy—reaching back to help others up.

Based on this trajectory, her next album might have explored:

1. Hope in the Ongoing Struggle

  • A more mature recognition that healing isn't linear.

2. Joy After the Mourning

  • Not naïve joy, but hard-earned joy.

  • Possibly gospel-influenced tracks about praise as a spiritual weapon.

3. Legacy and Encouragement

  • A call to the next generation of believers and strugglers.

  • A duet with a younger artist? A mothering or mentoring tone.

4. Deep Worship & Intimacy

  • Less pop, more reflective.

  • Perhaps more stripped-down acoustic or live worship recordings.

Imagined Tribute Album

Drawing on themes from Mandisa’s real-life struggles with depression, isolation, and loss — and her unwavering Christian faith — we can envision a fictional tribute album produced by friends in the music industry that would embody what she might have sung next: an honest, triumphant declaration of worship in spite of the pain. It would also include tracks from the performance artists themselves where their life stories intersected. Think songs created for a movie documenting and celebrating her life.

They would not be about perfect faith. But resilient faith.

Not about avoiding the valley. But about praising anyway — right in the middle of it.

This is that imagined album.
