A descent into the profound mystery of divine mercy.

With Track 8: Mysterium Crucis (The Mystery of the Cross) from the album, Lux Aeterna, we come to the theological and emotional depth of the cantata.

If the previous track, Agnus Qui Tollis, was a kneeling confession of mercy received, Mysterium Crucis is a descent into the profound mystery of that mercy: why did the Holy One suffer? What kind of God bears a cross? Here, the music must be stripped down yet sonorous—slow, stark, aching, yet full of awe. Not triumphant. Not sentimental. But reverent and trembling. The Cross is glory hidden in grief, love made visible through wounds, power revealed through surrender.

The goal of this song is to reverently explore the paradox of divine suffering—God crucified. The Cross is not merely a symbol of salvation, but the ultimate revelation of God’s nature.
Scriptural Themes:

  • 1 Corinthians 1:18–25 – “The message of the Cross is foolishness… but the power of God.”
  • Philippians 2:6–8 – “He humbled Himself… even to death on a cross.”
  • Isaiah 53:10 – “It was the will of the Lord to crush Him…”
  • Luke 23:34 – “Father, forgive them…”
