A worship anthem declaring Christ’s humility and exaltation, calling every heart to bow before the Name above all names.
“The Name Above All Names” is a worship song rooted in Philippians 2:5–11, celebrating the humility of Christ who, though fully God, laid aside His glory and took on the form of a servant. The verses reflect His descent into obedience and suffering, even to death on a cross, reminding us that the gospel begins with self-emptying love.
The chorus lifts with the triumph of Christ’s exaltation: God has given Him the name above every name, and one day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:9–11). This is not only future hope but present reality—the church joins heaven in declaring Jesus’ lordship now.
The bridge and outro expand the song into Trinitarian worship and prophetic proclamation. The song is both personal and cosmic: it draws believers into Christlike humility (Philippians 2:5) while magnifying the glory of God the Father through the risen and reigning Son.
Devotion
The pattern of Christ’s life is also the pattern of the Christian life. Paul begins this hymn with a call: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). Notice the order—Paul does not simply tell us to be humble; he shows us the humility of Jesus, and then says this is already yours in Him. Christ’s descent into servanthood was not only for our salvation, but also for our transformation.
If Jesus, who possessed all the fullness of deity, did not cling to His rights but willingly laid them down, how much more should we, who so often grasp at status and control, release them for the sake of others? The cross tells us that the path to true exaltation is not through self-promotion, but through surrender. God exalts the humble, because the humble mirror the very character of His Son.
When we confess “Jesus Christ is Lord,” we are not only looking to the end of history when every tongue will join in that confession—we are practicing it now. To bow the knee today is to align ourselves with the true story of the universe: humility first, then glory. In Christ, the way down is the way up.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, You who are the Name above every name, we marvel at Your humility. Though You were rich, You became poor; though You were God, You became man; though You were sinless, You bore our sin. Teach us to take on Your mind, to lay down our rights, to serve in love.
Father, as You exalted Your Son, exalt Him in our hearts. Make us people who confess with joy that Jesus Christ is Lord—in our work, our relationships, our trials, and our victories. Spirit of God, shape us into the likeness of the Servant King, until the day when every knee bows and every tongue confesses before Your throne. Amen.
