A most extraordinary weekend of weather has just passed. The eastern side of the UK woke on Saturday to a stiff southerly wind and temperatures more akin to what can be expected in mid-August. By the afternoon, temperatures had widely risen to 25-26C across parts of the Wash and East Anglia.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph forecast for Aroostook County

Officials at the National Weather Service in Caribou warned Monday that high winds could cause damage across northern Maine late Monday evening into Tuesday.

A high wind watch is in effect for Aroostook and Piscataquis counties, as well as northern Penobscot and northern Somerset counties.

Mal Walker, meteorologist with the weather service in Caribou, said Monday that a frontal system will cross through the area Monday night, and there are “pretty strong winds behind it.”

Florida officials fear Michael’s death toll will rise

Frost warning issued for Saturday night in parts of Maine

Overnight temperatures hovering above and around freezing this weekend have prompted a frost warning across parts of Maine.

The chilly air could damage sensitive plants and vegetation, according to the National Weather Service.

“Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the service warned in a Saturday advisory that covers much of the southern half of Maine.

Hurricane Michael leaves death and destruction in its wake

Hurricane Michael, which ripped through the Southeast, leaving a trail of death and destruction from Florida to Virginia, finally moved off the coast, over the Atlantic Ocean overnight.

Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane — the strongest on record to hit the area — wreaking havoc and causing emergencies. In the storm’s wake lay crushed and flooded buildings, shattered lives and at least 11 deaths, a number that officials worry could rise.

Storm Callum batters Britain with gale-force winds and heavy rain

Bad weather causes travel disruption and leaves more than 1,000 homes without electricity

Storm Callum has begun to batter parts of the UK with winds of up to 76mph and torrential rain, leaving more than 1,000 homes without power or electricity.

The Isles of Scilly recorded the most ferocious winds, as the third named storm of the season passed through south-west England, Wales and north-west England, while 60mph gales were recorded in Camborne in Cornwall and Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.
