The 81st Carmel Bach Festival opened with an immense 20th-century wallop. Saturday night, the sold-out Sunset auditorium included many Bach fans without a doubt, but the night belonged to Carl Orff and his famous choral masterpiece, “Carmina Burana.” Performed by the full ensemble led by the Festival’s principal conductor and artistic director Paul Goodwin, this well-known, morally titillating opus proved a strange, revealing and powerful beginning gambit.
